UUM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organised a two-day exhibition with the theme “Our Heritage, World Heritage” to celebrate UNESCO Day on 18 October 2014 at Dataran Merdeka.

The International Telecommunication Union-Universiti Utara Malaysia (ITU-UUM) Asia Pacific Centre of Excellence for Rural ICT Development was chosen to represent the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at the exhibition officiated by Deputy Prime Minister, Yang Amat Berhormat Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin, who is also the Minister of Education Malaysia.

The two-day exhibition was organised by the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) in collaboration with the Tourism and Culture Ministry, Malaysia. Among the other agencies involved in this exhibition were the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM).

The Deputy Director of ITU-UUM, Dr. Azizi Ab Aziz said the participation of ITU-UUM in UNESCO Day celebration indirectly presented tremendous opportunities for the public to know more about information and communication technology (ICT) projects developed by ITU-UUM.

"Besides that, we also provide information concerning programmes funded by MNCU and Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (MCMM) since 2010 to show the involvement and long-term commitment of ITU-UUM towards improving the productivity of human capital in addition to ICT development in the country," he said.

During the exhibition, ITU-UUM also took the opportunity to embark on various collaborative projects with other agencies in order to bridge and reduce the digital divide in Malaysia.

The exhibition organised by ITU-UUM during the UNESCO Day attracted more than 1000 visitors, including international tourists to their booth.

Among the inventions exhibited during UNESCO Day were one of the innovative products developed by UUM lecturer, Mr. Jasni Ahmad from the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC) known as e-WayCool which utilizes digital Wayang Kulit (DWK) to help students learn Mathematics in primary school.
