UNESCO DAY EXHIBITION OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE
PUBLIC TO GET UP-CLOSE WITH ITU-UUM
UUM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur – The
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
organised a two-day exhibition with the theme “Our Heritage, World Heritage” to
celebrate UNESCO Day on 18 October 2014 at Dataran Merdeka.
The International Telecommunication
Union-Universiti Utara Malaysia (ITU-UUM) Asia Pacific Centre of Excellence for
Rural ICT Development was chosen to represent the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC) at the exhibition officiated by Deputy Prime Minister, Yang
Amat Berhormat Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin, who is also the
Minister of Education Malaysia.
The two-day exhibition was organised by the
Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) in collaboration with the
Tourism and Culture Ministry, Malaysia. Among the other agencies involved in
this exhibition were the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Women,
Family and Community Development (KPWKM).
The Deputy Director of ITU-UUM, Dr. Azizi Ab Aziz
said the participation of ITU-UUM in UNESCO Day celebration indirectly
presented tremendous opportunities for the public to know more about
information and communication technology (ICT) projects developed by ITU-UUM.
"Besides that, we also provide information
concerning programmes funded by MNCU and Ministry of Communications and
Multimedia Malaysia (MCMM) since 2010 to show the involvement and long-term
commitment of ITU-UUM towards improving the productivity of human capital in
addition to ICT development in the country," he said.
During the exhibition, ITU-UUM also took the
opportunity to embark on various collaborative projects with other agencies in
order to bridge and reduce the digital divide in Malaysia.
The exhibition organised by ITU-UUM during the
UNESCO Day attracted more than 1000 visitors, including international tourists
to their booth.
Among the inventions exhibited during UNESCO Day
were one of the innovative products developed by UUM lecturer, Mr. Jasni Ahmad
from the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC) known as
e-WayCool which utilizes digital Wayang Kulit (DWK) to help students learn
Mathematics in primary school.
