ITU-UUM
UUM
ONLINE: The Universiti Utara Malaysia International Telecommunication
Union (UUM-ITU) Asia Pacific Centre of Excellence for Rural ICT Development
Foundation organized a workshop called Multimedia Basics For Children Workshop
at two locations namely the As-Syakirin Oran Mosque, Perlis and Kampung Tradisi
Keriang Valley Mosque, Sintok on 13 and 20 September respectively.
The workshop held by the
Digital Opportunity Centre ITU-UUM successfully attracted and nurtured the
creativity of students aged between 9 and 12 years in the field of animation
with the help of the Movie Maker software.
The Digital Opportunity
Centre ITU-UUM has been set up as a broadband Internet service centre to
accommodate the ICT needs of the surrounding communities since 2010. The
project is part of the ITU-UUM Community Programme.
Deputy Director of ITU-UUM,
Dr. Azizi Ab Aziz said the programme aims to raise awareness with regard to the
use of ICT amongst rural students in particular. The success and smooth running
of the workshop was made possible when the laptops and tablets used during the
workshops were contributed by Taiwan based APEC Digital Opportunity Centre
(ADOC).
"Our aim is to expose
the young people in rural areas to the world of technology which is growing
rapidly so as they are not left behind."
"With the knowledge
provided, they can utilize it for the purpose of education, particularly in the
search for relevant information," he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman
of the As-Syakirin Oran Mosque, Abdul Rashid Said Asghar expressed his
gratitude and appreciation to ITU-UUM for selecting the children in the area to
participate in the workshop.
He said the workshop would
benefit the children in countless ways namely occupying their leisure time
during the school holidays, thus preventing them from getting involved in
unhealthy activities.
"I hope that a
programme such as this would continue as it will strengthen the relationship
between the villagers and the university," he said.
