UUM-UNIMAS EMBARK ON A COLLABORATIVE VENTURE TO PROVIDE
TRAINING IN MANAGING 1MALAYSIA INTERNET CENTRE (PI1M)
UUM ONLINE: 26 February –
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) dan Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) signed
a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to provide training, assistance as well as to
empower the Managers and Assistant Managers of 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M)
in Kedah and Sarawak. The signing ceremony was held at EDC-UUM Hotel recently.
International Telecommunication Union-Universiti
Utara Malaysia (ITU-UUM) will embark on a collaborative venture with the
Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI-CoERI),
UNIMAS to provide training in management, marketing, entrepreneurship and ICT.
The MoA was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of UUM,
Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS,
Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamad Kadim Suaidi in the presence of UUM Bursar, Tuan Haji
Amron Man and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) UNIMAS, Prof.
Dr. Kopli Bujang.
UUM Vice-Chancellor said, PI1M was introduced by
the government in 2013 to provide access to high-speed Internet services,
training in the field of ICT and to bridge the digital divide between rural and
urban communities.
Thus, in order to assist in the achievement of the
government’s aspiration, UUM and UNIMAS will be involved directly in the
development this project for people in the rural areas.
"The contract for PI1M training programme was
awarded to UNIMAS in 2012 by MAXIS for a duration of 3 years with the funding
of over RM1 million. A total of six PI1M centres in Yan, Kedah and Bau, Sarawak
will be involved in this training programme throughout the period,” he said.
He added, “The signing of the MoA will hopefully
offer more opportunities and provide significant benefits to people in the
rural areas in terms of ICT facilities and technology transfer. Since the last
two years, we have seen the growth and success of the programme.
"UNIMAS and UUM will continue this
collaborative effort with the rural community to address the needs of the
community as well as discovering the opportunity for research activities. I
believe that ISITI-CoERI and ITU-UUM will become the reference centres and be
respected in their effort to assist the rural community in this region,” he
said.
