UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) through its Centre
of Excellence, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-UUM) signed a
Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with NERA Infocom (M) Sdn. Bhd. (NERA) to provide
training and assistance to empower the Managers and Assistant Managers of
1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M) in Kedah, Selangor and Putrajaya.
NERA is the Project Coordinator to provide adequate
infrastructure and run the staff development programme for the PI1M, housed
under the management of Maxis Berhad, while ITU-UUM is one of the centres of
excellence exists in the Peninsular Malaysia to provide training and establish
the ICT community centres in Kedah and Perlis as well as to organise various
community programmes at both national and international levels through numerous
grants obtained.
The MoA was signed by the UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato'
Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and the NERA Managing Director, Dato' Ahmad
Fauzan Hashim in the presence of UUM Bursar, Amron Man and NI-SP Business Unit
Manager, Hairani Hamid.
Dato' Seri Vice-Chancellor said the signing of the MoA
enables UUM to provide specialised training to the PI1M Managers and Assistant
Managers, while NERA channels financial funds for the implementation of the
training programme in fourteen (14) PI1M centres located in Kedah, Selangor and
Putrajaya for two (2) consecutive years starting this year.
"The proposed training programme will focus on
various ICT scopes based on the requirements given by NERA and the Malaysian
Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).
"Amongst the PI1M centres involved in this
specialised training are Yan Kecil, Guar Cempedak, Langkawi, Pokok Sena,
Jerlun, Gunung Hilir, Napoh, Kodiang in Kedah, Linggi and Semenyih in Selangor
and Presint 9 Phase 10, Presint 9 Phase 3, Presint 16 and Presint 18 in
Putrajaya," he said.
He added that the collaborative venture between UUM and
NERA is expected to create more space for the rural community to equally enjoy
the ICT facilities and technology transfer. He also expected more joint
programmes with the industry could be undertaken and carried out in the future.
Meanwhile, the NERA Managing Director, Dato' Ahmad Fauzan
Hashim expressed his gratitude and appreciation to UUM for its willingness to
cooperate with NERA to provide training and assistance to empower the Managers
and Assistant Managers of the PI1M.
"The signing of the MoA will hopefully produce more
competitive and sustainable PI1M centres through a specialised training
programme that covers all aspects of entrepreneurship, management and marketing
via the ICT and to provide significant benefits to the socio-economic
development to the locals," he said.
Also present at the signing
ceremony were Acting Director of ITU-UUM, Dr. Samry @ Mohd. Shamrie Sainin;
Director of UUM-KL, Dr. Ahmad Rizal Mazlan; university officials and members of
NERA management.
